Rice opens in Queensland
Rice had its world premiere at Queensland Thetare, in the Billie Brown Studio, at the end of June. I had the great fortune to be present, and was thoroughly chuffed by what the team have done with it. The reviews are still coming in but so far have been very positive. Lee’s often very funny […]
Rice in Hothouse
Rice will get a three-season run in 2017, with a final week in Albury/Wodonga through Hothouse Theatre. Very excited to have it in the regions, especially close to Australia’s rice belt.
Let’s get some Rice in 2017!
Wow. A couple of years ago I was in a rice paddy just outside of the rice town, Deniliquin. All the reeds were thick and bent over, like swathes of hunched bushes. As a city person, and despite my mother agricultural background and prowess, I am incredibly disconnected from the food I eat, from how […]
A month in Minneapolis
Let’s get this out of the way. I have watched A LOT of Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Scandal’. I am often tired. I am often annoyed by Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant. I have fallen prey to a TV show that is constantly terrorists-USA-going-to-war-election-campaigns-dead-children-dead-husbands high stakes. It’s ridiculous and often beyond credible. But I am watching […]
Wrice – a wonderful residency
I woke up with a crook neck on the second day of the residency, from my soft-as-butter pillow. During the days, with a stiffly straight back and limited movement, I actually managed to re-draft my play ‘Rice’. Quite fitting as I was on the Wrice residency. I’d been in terrain like this back in 2009 […]
Festival of Live Art
It’s launched! The Naked Self will be getting you all (privately) nude at North Melbourne Town Hall. Season is 2-11 March 2016.
New acronym – QPDA
It makes me think of a bank but the ‘QPDA’ (Queensland Premier’s Drama Award) is not a bank. Well, it sort of is, as they put money towards developing scripts. So my play Rice is getting a little bit more support in the Hunger Games style program that is the QPDA. Go Rice! Fifty one […]
Power plays + Chain play +WrICE
Theatre companies are unveiling their seasons for 2016, and I have snuck it into STC’s short plays project, Power plays. This project has been curated by Polly Rowe, the Literary Manager at the STC. I’m currently in the treatment stage, and will be plugging away at a first draft in the coming months. And a […]
Rice in the National Playwriting Festival 2015
I’m in Canberra at the moment, at The Street Theatre, with Tanya Dickson (director), Peter Matheson (dramaturge), Karla Conway (assistant dramaturge) and actors Annette Shun Wah and Gowrie Varma. We’re workshopping my play Rice, and doing a brain-bending tasks of creating more story for one of the central characters. I am breaking apart the play […]
