In inner-city Melbourne, a group of five disparate strangers begin a weekly adult swimming course. They’ve each got reasons for why they need to learn to swim. The affable Beatrice wants to swim on romantic holidays with her husband. Jas wants to win a triathlon. Liina wants to return to a magical beach. Micah’s doing it for a bet. Doug wants to swim with his newborn.

They’ve all enrolled in a tailored swimming course with Arvind, an engineer by day-time and a former competitor at the Commonwealth Games. Adrvind’s approach as a swim instructor is to be equal parts drill sergeant and psychologist. He guarantees to get his students swimming after eight weeks. Unless somebody drowns first.
